Case study: Malama Maunalua and 3Rwater partner to engage residents

Malama Maunalua, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the coastal environment of Maunalua Bay in Hawaii, partnered with 3Rwater to provide essential stormwater education to support contractors and community members.

Using Follow the Drop, MM offered “free rainwater assessments” for property owners to help identify and size green stormwater infrastructure retrofit projects. The program identified over 200 project inquiries from East Honolulu residents. During the assessments, surveys were provided to identify the barriers and opportunities for GSI retrofits. Their market research identified that one of the top barriers for property owners to get the rainwater capture project installed was not knowing who to call or which contractors are experienced in green stormwater infrastructure.

With follow-on funding from both NFWF and NOAA, the Smart Yards program was born. The program offers educational workshops to both residents and contractors on the basics of installing rainwater catchment systems, rain gardens, and permeable pavement and connects them with one another. Follow the Drop provides additional opportunities for community members and contractors to identify and track their GSI projects and provide workforce development in stormwater.
